Q: Where did you attend college
A: University of Texas
Q: What degree did you receive?
A: BA in Psychology.
Q: Did you go to your dream college?
A: Didn’t really have one. Applied last min and got in through summer school. My mother was from another country and didn’t understand how college worked in the US.
Q: Do you think your college education was necessary for your success in business?
A: Yes
Q: Who or what led you to your current career path?
A: Oh so many things. My work now is a compilation of all the things I’ve done including teaching, being a flight attendant, doing outside sales, helping in a family business and speaking.
Q: Was your current career your first choice, or did you switch?
A: Switched. Not sure I was clear on a first choice. Although, I do remember as a little girl wanting to be a talk show host on a show like Good Morning America. I guess I’m close!
Q: Was mentorship significant to your business journey?
A: Somewhat as I got older. However, I paid for the mentorship.
Q: How do you approach networking and the building of professional relationships?
A: Relationships first.
Q: What is the ratio of males to females in your business?
A: My business or the business I’m in? My biz has 2 women. Overall my profession probably has more men however that is changing. 40-60%?
Q: Have you observed or been affected by a wage gap between men and women in your field?
A: Sure. Men still get paid more than women for keynotes. Not always- but women are perceived to be a lower fee. We are working to change that.
Q: How have you asserted yourself as a powerful woman in your field?
A: I chair the Professional Women of the National Speaker Association. I take a stand for women in the workplace and I have a voice when often they do not.
Q: What has been your biggest tool in gaining credibility in the business world?
A: Speaking.
Q: How does social media, if at all, impact your business?
A: It probably would a lot more if I did it! It helps me get my message out and establish my platform.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
A: Believe in yourself.
Q: Lastly, what would be the number one piece of advice you would give to your high school self?
A: You are worthy. Trust in YOU and your heart and not the opinion of doubters.
